This study analyzes the sociolinguistic landscape of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, a country characterized by remarkable linguistic diversity. Using a descriptive and historical approach, the author examines the status and functions of the linguistic levels recognized by the Constitution: French as the official language, the four national languages (Lingala, Swahili, Ciluba, and Kikongo), and the numerous local and ethnic languages. The article traces the historical development of language policies from the colonial period to the present day and highlights the factors that have shaped Congolese multilingualism. Particular attention is given to the growing influence of English, driven by globalization, employment opportunities, international organizations, migration, and educational dynamics. The findings show that multilingualism is a central component of Congolese cultural identity and a key factor in social communication. The study concludes that the promotion and protection of all languages spoken in the country are essential for preserving cultural heritage, strengthening national cohesion, and supporting sustainable development.
